Entry from: Cairo, Egypt Entry Title: "Coptic Cairo" Entry: "Today we had breakfast with our tour buddies, Ivor and Sriyani; this is their last morning in Egypt. They left for the airport to catch a flight to Malaysia. After saying goodbye, Jacqui and I headed out to walk to the Cairo Metro and for a cost of one Egyptian pound each we took a ride to Coptic Cairo. After one train change we arrived safe and sound in the heart of Coptic Cairo. Although, I did take one photo of a train in the station before I was told 'no photos' in station. Before the arrival of Islam, Egypt was primarily Christian and were known as Copts. When the Arab army occupied Egypt in 640 AD, its leader instructed his people to take care of the Copts. Today Copts make up about 10% of the population. The churches are in a compound that is quite pleasant. We visited St. George church and convent. St. George is the only round church in Egypt shaped that way because it was built on one of the original fortress gate towers. In rapid succession we saw the Church of the Virgin, the cemeteries, church of St. Barbara and, surprisingly, Ben Ezra Synagogue. Unfortunately I could only photograph in St. George. We bought a litre bottle of water from a store in the area for 3 EP, about 54 cents; the same bottle in the hotel was 15 EP! After <b>...</b>
