Entry: "Arrived early at the Florence train station, found our gate like the pros we've become, and had no problem with gents offering to help us. Two hour train ride making multiple stops along the way. The only inconvenience was the ticket agent last night booked us for seats 61 & 62 in Coach 1; there was no seat 61 so Robin sat in the luggage rack. The train was nearly empty, so she actually had a seat next to me, and even the ticket taker was a little puzzled by our seat assignments. Got into Venice around 11:30 and figured we could walk right to our hotel since I'd sketched a map last night, and it was a pretty easy route: turn left, then turn left on the second street and we should be looking right at it. We walked for about 7 minutes before we realized the 'streets' are only about 6' wide and we had already passed several of them without noticing. A quick backtrack to the station and we found our hotel easily. What a different town. No motor vehicles; you can drive across the lagoon, then park in a garage near the train station and walk from there. No scooters or bicycles even. It's all about walking and water taxis or gondolas. Except there is currently a boatman's strike going on, so not many water taxis were running <b>...</b>
