1928 CUNNINGHAM DUAL COWL PHAETON - AN AMERICAN MAKE
Description
JAMES CUNNINGHAM WASN'T INTERESTED IN MASS PRODUCING CARS BUT IN MAKING THEM. CUNNINGHAM ENTERED IN NEGOTIATIONS WITH THE DURYEA BROTHERS IN 1896 TO MANUFACTURE THEIR AUTOMOBILES. AT THE TURN OF THE CENTURY THE FIRM PRODUCED ELECTRIC POWERED BUGGIES. IN 1908, CUNNINGHAM STARTED TO MAKE CAR TRANSMISSIONS, ENGINES, AXLES, AND RUNNING BOARDS. BUT THEN MADE THEIR OWN BRAND OF CARS PRICED AT $3500. CUNNINGHAM MADE ONLY LUXURY CARS AND BY 1918, THE PRICE OF CUNNINGHAMS APPROACHED $6000 - $15000, DEPENDING ON MODEL. THESE CARS WERE HAND MADE AND NEVER MASS-PRODUCED AND WERE BOUGHT BY HOLLYWOOD STARS, WEALTHY UPPER CLASS INDIVIDUALS, AND THE LIKE. AFTER LINDBERGH'S SOLO FLIGHT FROM NEW YORK TO PARIS, CUNNINGHAM DEDUCED THAT PLANES WOULD BE BOUGHT IN NUMBERS COMPARABLE TO LUXURY CARS. THE FIRST PLANE CUNNINGHAM MADE WAS IN 1929 AND CONTINUED TO MAKE PLANES UNTIL 1938. THE GREAT DEPRESSION AFFECTED MANY CAR MAKERS ESPECIALLY LUXURY CARS. BY 1931 CUNNINGHAM STOPPED MAKING CARS. FOR FIVE YEARS AFTERWARD THE PLANT MADE BODIES FOR OTHER MANUFACTURERS. SO, BY 1936 CUNNINGHAM WAS OUT OF THE CAR MAKING BUSINESS FOR GOOD. LOOKING AT THIS EXCELLENTLY RESTORED PHAETON, NOTICE THE FOG LIGHTS OUT FRONT, THE SIDE MARKER LIGHT WITHIN THE RUNNING LIGHTS, THE INNOVATIVE DASH, MODERN AND SLEEK INTERIOR, WOOD BOWS FOR THE CONVERTIBLE TOP, DUAL SPARE TIRES WITH MOUNTED MIRRORS, AND THE ADDED TOUCH OF PINSTRIPPING. THANKS FOR VIEWING THIS RARE AND BEAUTIFUL RESTORATION OF THIS CLASSIC.
