The topmost end of the car market may be a lucrative one as the profit margins per car are very good but as Geoffrey Briscoe, MD of BMW Malaysia, will tell you, its also a very tough one. The customers here are typically corporate leaders and successful businessmen used to excellence in every aspect of their lives and that includes the cars they buy. For a car to satisfy their demanding requirements and expectations, its got to be very good and the BMW 7-Series has been among the cars which meet with the approval of such customers. However, in certain markets, there are also specific requirements like engine size (and of course, 'reasonable prices) and to sell many units, a carmaker has to understand those requirements well. For BMW Malaysia, offering variety has been important and it even offers a highly-efficient turbodiesel variant of the 7-Series. For petrol engines, there have only been the 740Li and 750Li available since the launch of the current 5th-generation (F02) last year. While sales have been pretty good considering their prices (some 140 units were sold last year), it was clear that more could have been sold if a smaller version was also available. In fact, in the year prior to the new generation being launched, 92% of 7-Series sales (in Malaysia) were of the 730Li which was absent when the new generation appeared.
