When Toyota came out with the Vios (known as the Soluna in some markets) in the mid-1990s, its aim was to offer a more affordable sedan in developing markets where price was a major consideration. The Corolla, its 'world car since the 1960s, had grown bigger and also more expensive, moving it away from its original entry-level position where it was the first car many bought. With the third and current generation introduced in 2007, sales accelerated, going from 22751 units in 2007 to 32710 units in 2008 an impressive 43% jump. Apart from being an even better Vios, the third generation was also offered in more versions, giving the variety that customers expect. A bit later on, the addition of the 1.5J at the lowest end of the Vios range extended the line-up to 5 versions. However, 2009 sales of the Vios declined in tandem with the overall contraction of the market due to economic reasons. UMW Toyota Motor is confident that with the unexpectedly good first quarter industry performance, 2010 will see Vios sales rising again and matching or exceeding the 2008 record. In fact, first quarter Vios sales are already 27% higher than for the same period in 2009 so things are looking good for the model and monthly sales are expected to be around 2700 units.
