BMW Munich plant production site
Description
The history of the BMW Group began in 1916 with the construction of airplane engines in Munich Oberwiesenfeld. The BMW trademark - known today throughout the world - comes from this era. The emblem was originally designed to symbolise a rotating propeller. Today's Munich plant was founded in 1922. From 1923 on, the plant built motorcycles. In 1928, it added automobiles to its production line when BMW took over an automobile plant in Eisenach and the Austin license to build the Dixi subcompact as well. After that, BMW automobiles were developed in Munich and manufactured in Eisenach until World War II. After the war, motorcycle production restarted in 1948 in Munich. The plant began building automobiles again three years later, first producing the large saloons of the 500 Series (V8), followed by subcompacts like the Isetta, the BMW 600, and the BMW 700. In 1961, BMW had a decisive breakthrough with its BMW 1500 - the first model of the "New Class". Today in the Munich plant some 9000 employees from over 50 countries build the BMW 3 Series as Sedan and Touring, as well as 6-, 8-, and 12-cylinder petrol engines, 8-cylinder diesel engines, and the high-performance engines for the BMW M3, M5, and M6. Further more dies and body components are supplied to other BMW locations by the Munich plant. Plant guide part 1 tw.youtube.com Plant guide part 2 tw.youtube.com
