Popular entertainer pitches the new, 1960 Chevrolet Corvair in this vintage, "live" commercial. Motor Trend's "Car of the Year" in 1960, the rear drive, air-cooled engined Corvair was a radical departure from other Detroit designs of the decade. Although expensive to manufacture, the "compact car" was initially a success for General Motors with annual sales often exceeding 200000 units and total sales from the nine years of production (1960-1969) totalling 1786243 cars. Following the safety issued raised about the car in Ralph Nader's 1965 book, UNSAFE AT ANY SPEED resulting in sales plummeting 95% between 1965 and 1969, GM cancelled production of the car.
