Fiat Bravo 1.8 HLX Weird Engine Noise - what is it?

Fiat Bravo 1.8 HLX '96 model, been making this weird 'supercharger esque' type noise for about a year now, no noticeable loss of power/economy etc just makes a whine wondered what it is. Bearings of some sort? its had the tensioner replaced after its been making this noise as thought it was that but still same :S ::::::::::Please comment::::::::::
