New Peugeot 3008

Peugeot's system of numbering its models has been fairly consistent for decades -- three digits with a zero in the middle. In fact, Peugeot strongly believed that the zero in the middle was so closely associated with its models that when Mazda introduced a model designated the '808' in the mid-1970s, the French carmaker tried to stop its use (but didn't succeed). The last digit has usually indicated the generation of the model (205, 206, 207, etc) and it'll be interesting to see what happens when '9' is reached... In recent years however, the 'traditional' numbering system has gained a second set which has two zeros instead of one. The first was the 1007 and the explanation for having this extended number was that the bodystyle was so new for Peugeot that it justified a new numbering system -- never mind the fact that Peugeot did manage before by adding suffixes like 'SW' and 'cc' for new variants. After the 1007 came the 4007 which was also a fairly new type of vehicle for Peugeot, being a SUV (adapted from the Mitsubishi Outlander). Both the 1007 and 4007 have not appeared in Malaysia but what will be in Nasim showrooms next week will be the 3008 which was launched in Europe a year ago. The 3008 also has a bodystyle which is new to Peugeot and because it's a sort of hybrid between a SUV and a MPV, it falls under the industry classification of 'crossover'.
