All New 2011 Mazda 3 CKD & MPS Launched In Malaysia

As announced earlier, the Mazda3 is now assembled locally at the Inokom plant in Kulim, Kedah (which is also where BMW Malaysia has the X1 and 5-Series assembled). Mazda has also begun assembling the same model in Thailand so it's clear that after the Mazda2, the Mazda3 is the next most important passenger car model for the company. In fact, the Mazda3 is of greater significance to Mazda as it is sold more widely than the Mazda2 and annual sales are around 400000 units worldwide. Though Mazda has a big plant (two in fact, as the passenger car plant making the Mazda2 was built more recently) in Thailand and also assembles a version of the Mazda3 in the Philippines, it has chosen not to use the benefits of the AFTA agreement (which allow duty-free intra-ASEAN trading) and is instead assembling the same model in two countries. This seems uneconomical as it would make more sense to assemble in one country in bigger volumes for lower costs and export around the region. However, from what Yuji Nakamine, Managing Executive Officer and GM of the Overseas Sales Division at Mazda, said, the reasons for this move seem to be partly to do with the company's sensitivity to government expectations. While agreeing that producing at a single facility is good for economies of scale, Mazda also believes that by assembling the Mazda3 locally, it can help generate employment opportunities.
