Mazda Nagare Concept introduced by Franz von Holzhausen
Description
At this years LA Auto Show, one of the most striking concepts was displayed at the Mazda stand. The Nagare concept was introduced by Frans von Holzhausen, Director of Design at Mazda Design of North America in Irvine, CA. The main theme of the concept was "Nagare", a word that in Japanese can mean "Wind". The sculpture of the exterior surfaces are sculpted with that theme, wind flowing over the body, in mind. Though clearly a concept with a lot of items sadly not realistic for production, it was refreshing to see that car designers dare to bring passion and dynamics back into automotive styling. Under the overall responsabilty of Mazda's new Head of Design Laurens van den Acker, Mazda is really exploring different themes to aid in determining the future identity of the brand. The organic result is even more interesting if you compare it to the rigid industrial design themes on the concepts produced under Van den Acker's direction during his Ford time. Brand imaging sure is an interesting subject.
