1989 Mille Miglia Retrospective -Day 2 / Part 3 along the Adriatic
Description
Day two for competitors starts early in Ferrara, a 7AM start which means most of the entrants have had 3 or 4 hours of sleep....the 400+ mile day includes long straights along the Adriatic coast as well as a detour into hill town / country of San Marino. We joined the MM at the lunch stop in Gabicce Monte and followed the route to Roma, where we arrived at 10PM somewhat exhausted despite the comforts of our new rental Euro Luxobarge Audi V8. The Saturday was humid and gray, still the crowds lined the route through the major cities. This could be called the day of the Alfa Romeo 1900 as we seemed to be encountering them constantly, whether in Berlina form or Coupes by Zagato and Pininfarina. Other highlights included and Alfa 1750 Zagato, a brace of Alfa 2900's, a couple of Lancia Aurelia's, and the white Ferrari 250 Mille Miglia co-piloted by the delicious Ornella Muti, a Gilco Bi-Motore 8C (#135-listen to the exhaust note as it passes) as well as a superb Fiat 500 Coupe . Our most anxious moment was being forced into the center median by a merging truck, the external camera mounted next to the rocker panel was nearly destroyed!
