British royal wedding Friday 29 April 2011 London (c) St James' Palace. After a five-month long engagement and some seven years of living together, HRH Prince William Arthur Philip Louis and Catherine (Kate) Elizabeth Middleton finally tied the knot in London on Friday 29 April 2011 as the world watched. The newly weds are now known as the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge. The live televised historic event was viewed by over two billion people. Middleton wore an ivory white lace and silk gown that might not redefine modern fashion — but in its extraordinary elegance. The Victorian style wedding gown was a hand-embroidered English and French Chantilly with slight padding at the hips and 58 organza-covered buttons snaking up the back. It had a discreet v-neck, long lace sleeves and a train that measured almost nine feet (270cm) long. It was designed by Sarah Burton of Lee Alexander McQueen CBE who committed suicide in 2010. Burton also designed the white, cowl-neck column gown worn by maid-of-honor Pippa Middleton, the bride's sister. The Queen wore an Angela Kelly-designed sunshine yellow dress and coat with a matching hat. The Duchess of Cornwall — Prince William's stepmother — wore a champagne-coloured dress and pale blue and champagne coat with lush embroidery by British designer Anna Valentine.
