1959 EDSEL CORSAIR CONVERTIBLE, 1 OF 1343 MADE
Description
I THINK THE '59 EDSEL WAS THE BEST LOOKING OF THE 2 1/2 PRODUCTION RUN. THE FACELIFT OF '59 WAS A BIG IMPROVEMENT FROM THE '58 FIRST YEAR MODEL. BUT ALL EDSELS ARE UNIQUE AND RARE ESPECIALLY THIS CORSAIR OF WHICH ONLY 1343 CORSAIR CONVERTIBLES WERE PRODUCED. THIS RAGTOP WOULD HAVE COST YOU $3072 AT THE DEALER. THERE WERE TWO ENGINES AVAILABLE IN FIFTY-NINE. A 361 CID, 303 HP, V8 FOR THE RANGER AND PACER MODELS, AND A 332 CID, 225 HP, 410 CID, 345 HP, FOR CORSAIRS AND CITATIONS. CONVERTIBLES CAME ONLY IN THE CORSAIR MODEL AND THERE MIGHT BE 25 OR SO OF THESE CORSAIR CONVERTIBLES LEFT IN EXISTENCE. EDSEL NEVER DID TAKE OFF. MAYBE IT WAS TOO CLOSE TO THE LOWER FORD CAR, OR MAYBE TOO CLOSE TO THE UPPER CLASS MERCURY. OR MAYBE IT WAS IT'S LOOKS WITH THAT HORSE COLLAR GRILLE. EDSEL DEALERS WERE DISGUSTED WITH THE SALE VOLUME THAT SOME DEALERS SLASHED PRICES JUST TO GET RID OF THEM. TOTAL EDSEL SALES IN '59 WERE AROUND 44000 WITH ALL MODELS. EDSEL'S 1960 MODEL WAS A BASIC '60 FORD SHARING MOST SHEET METAL AND COMPONENTS. EDSEL WAS KILLED OFF IN NOVEMBER OF 1959. LOOKING AT THIS BEAUTY, I WOULD HAVE TO SAY THAT THIS IS AN ATTRACTIVE AUTOMOBILE AND IF THIS CONVERTIBLE WERE OFFERED TO ME -- I'D TAKE IT. THANKS VERY MUCH FOR VIEWING THIS VERY RARE AND VERY SPECTACULAR EDSEL CORSAIR CONVERTIBLE.
