Daylami - Ascot - King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Diamond Stakes (Group 1)
Description
1999. For all the field contained 3 European classic winners in Silver Patriarch, Nedawi and Oath, the absence of dual Oaks winner Ramruma and Eclipse hero Compton Admiral, plus the fact that none of the leading French-trained middle-distance stars such as Montjeu and Sagamix were in the line-up means this can't be regarded as a vintage renewal and certainly not the mid-season 'championship' it's often dubbed; half of those who took part can safely be classed as middle-distance stayers as opposed to specialist 10f/12f performers but, those points made, there's little doubt we saw an outstanding performance from the winner as Daylami slaughtered his field in tremendous style; a fair pace increased significantly some 4f out and those behind the winner generally finished tired. Daylami, trained specifically for this race since Epsom, as opposed to the season before when taking part almost as an afterthought following his Eclipse triumph, left no one in any doubt that he's a top-class performer who does stay 1½m well; having tracked the leaders, he briefly looked in trouble when the pace increased but came back onto the bit after 2f out and surged clear through the final 1f; in this form he was always going to take a deal of beating in his next race, the Irish Champion Stakes at Leopardstown.
