Dr. Bernard LaFayette was the trailblazer of the Selma, Alabama voting rights movement in 1965. As one of MLK, Jr's chief lieutenants, LaFayette chose Selma when other SCLC staff members thought it to be a hopeless cause, because they said, "the Blacks are too scared and the Whites are too mean." Dr. LaFayette met and became connected in spirit with Mr. and Mrs. Samuel W. Boynton and Mrs. Marie Foster. They bonded, MLK, Jr. was invited and accepted the invitation and the rest is history. The SCLC staff used the Boynton's home at 1315 Lapsley Street as headquarters from January through March in 1965, when Blacks demonstrated that enough was enough and that they were not going to tolerate discrimination in voting any more.
