Elsa Lanchester sings "The Ladies' Bar"
Description
Elsa Lanchester made a name for herself in the 1920s as a celebrated comedienne, with her appearances in London revues, night clubs and cabaret. She sang songs and ballads of a humorous nature, several of which she recorded both on 78s and LPs. Her professional life then became subservient to Charles Laughton's when she married him in 1929 and her career thereafter consisted mainly of supporting roles in Hollywood movies. Her most famous cinema appearance was as The Bride of Frankenstein (1935) but here she sings a song, progressively getting more sozzled as she props up The Ladies' Bar, in which she ponders the fact that teetotallers have no better luck in life than those who are fond of booze! (78rpm disc made in 1930.)
