80TH ANNIVERSARY OF FRITZ VON OPEL'S RECORD-SETTING RIDE

Description

In May 1928 on Berlin's AVUS racetrack, Fritz Von Opel set a speed record of an estimated 238 km/h in a rocket-powered car, the RAK 2. Von Opel, grandson of Opel Motor Car Company founder Adam Opel, and his partners used 24 solid-fuel rockets packed with 120 kilograms of explosives to propel the RAK 2 forward. More than 3000 guests from show business, sports, science and politics including movie star Lilian Harvey and boxer Max Schmeling attended the event. Available video includes archive shots of the event. Thank you for reading this post.
