www.VoyagerClassics.com http For 11 years, the Rolls Royce Silver Cloud III, with its less expensive sister Bentley, dominated the luxury car industry. Today, it is considered to be the last very desirable classic Rolls-Royce. Rolls-Royce Limited was a British car founded by Henry Royce and Charles Stewart Rolls on March 15, 1906. On 1914, it also became an aero-engine manufacturing company. In 1973, the car division was separated and was called Rolls-Royce Motors. In 1931, the company bought its rival car maker, Bentley. From then on, and until 2002, Rolls-Royce and Bentley car models were often identical except for their radiator grille and minor details. The Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud was the centerpiece model for the Rolls-Royce Motor Cars from April 1955 to March 1966. It was the successor to the Silver Dawn and the predecessor to the Silver Shadow. The Silver Cloud was mainly designed by JP Blatchley and was a major improvement to the highly derivative Silver Dawn. Its chassis was a simple steel box section that was welded together. Weighing at a whopping 1.95 tonnes, the Silver Cloud III had a 4.9 L six cylinder unit with a twin SU carburettors, and a four-speed automatic transmission. Suspensions were independent coils at the front and semi-elliptic springs at the rear. Power steering and air conditioning became additional options in 1965. The Silver Cloud II came out in 1959.
