Entry from: Elkhart, United States Entry Title: "Studebaker Museum" Entry: "The Studebaker family came to America from Solingen, Germany, in 1736. No other manufacturer of transportation vehicles has such a glorious heritage. It began in 1736 and continues to this day. Studebaker reportedly built its first wagon in America around 1750. In the 1800s, Studebaker built hundreds of wagons for the North during the Civil War and by the time the US was 100 years old, Studebaker was the largest producer of horse-drawn vehicles in the world. In the 1900s, Studebaker entered the automobile business. They first built an electric car followed by a gasoline automobile. They also manufactured commercial trucks, military vehicles, coupes, Presidential vehicles, and the most popular compact car -- the 1959 Lark. In April 1962, they introduced the Avanti. Unfortunately, due to the competition of the Big 3 automobile manufacturers, the Avanti is the only Studebaker car still in existence today. However, it is now manufactured in Canada."
