VAUXHALL FRONTERA 2.0 Sport 1996 (October 2009 video)
Description
You'd have to search hard to find one like this now, but anyway, this gives you a look under the bonnet and under the body of these cars - born incidentally from the Isuzu MU, and now dreadfully copied by Chinese manufacturers. Bought from Fords of Winsford, Cheshire, October 1998 with 28000 miles on the clock. Still used as a second car around Cheshire. Very useful in recent winters as elderly relatives snowed in near Macclesfield. Other cars: French design Nissan Primera Estate P12 (outstanding reliability) and Vauxhall Vectra C Saloon (ok but costly repairs 2010). Frontera was re-Waxoyled March 2011. Runs well on Carlube Semi-Synthetic oil. Has always returned 28 mpg if driven carefully. No current problems as at June 10, 2011 other than having to cut off the end of the downpipe from the cat. to mate it to the exhaust system with a "sleeve". The sleeve ultimately leaks. Ideally should be welded but I keep using exhaust putty :) Verdict? Simple 8 valve 2 litre engine is reliable if somewhat dull and sluggish. Pulls trailers ok due to gear ratios but don't expect to be away first at the lights! Easy DIY servicing. Back seats practically useless (we removed ours). Removable windows and roof serve no purpose in British weather. Cheap spares. As with many old style 4x4s underbody traps mud and brake pipes can easily corrode if not Waxoyled or Dinitrol applied etc. Offroad capability? Well take a look at some of the videos on the right!! The past two winters this has sat on ...
