Nat Shilkret Harry Reser Lewis James Peerless Quartet - Our American Girl - Roaring 20's.MP4
Description
Incorrectly identified as The Troubadours, this is Nat Shilkret's Orchestra with a stellar line-up of personnel for this recording: Harry Reser plays, you guessed it, the banjo! Lewis James sings the first chorus, then joins the Peerless Quartet for a rousing final chorus. The "American Girl" was the Stinson "Detroiter" monoplane Ruth Elder (1902-1977), who became known as "Lady Lindy", and Captain George Haldeman flew in an attempt to make her the first woman to cross the Atlantic. In October 1927, Elder and Haldeman took off from Roosevelt Field for Paris. Weather forced them to land on the ocean after a flight of 2623 miles, some 300 miles short of the goal. Ruth Elder spent nine hours at the controls. They were rescued by a Dutch oil tanker. As their plane was being hoisted on deck, it caught fire and was totally destroyed. Although they had been unsuccessful, they were treated as national and international heroes. They were even accorded the ultimate hero's welcome, a ticker tape parade through the streets of New York City. Between Lindbergh's successful May, 1927 flight, and their flight in October of the same year, a host of other aviators and aviatrix's also attempted to be the first to make other flights. The Dole company offered a $25K first prize and a $10K second prize for the first flight from California to Hawaii. Also, a flight from Europe to the USA had not yet been accomplished. The story of these flights is chronicled in Jack Huttig's excellent 1980 book ...
