Entry: "We arrived in Mendoza at 9am as it was gearing up for the annual "Festival Nacional de Vendimia", the wine harvesting festival. The local vinyards take part in a parade along with muchos gauchos and beauty queens representing each area of the city. There were whole families on horseback in traditional gaucho clothing, followed by people on decorated floats, throwing fruit and grapes out to people in the crowd. We decided to take advantage of the trips on offer in Mendoza as it´s in the shadow of the Andes and is prime wine growing country. Our first trip was a day-long jaunt out on a mini bus into the "Alta Montaña" -- high mountains. The tour guide spoke only Spanish, so we were slightly confused as she informed the enthusiastic people on our bus all about the mountains and the landscape. We caught the odd word, like "condor" and "kilometre" and just guessed the rest! The trip took in mountain lakes, ancient man-made bridges and ancient natural bridges! The natural bridge, "Puente del Incas" was once neighboured by a luxury spa hotel which was wiped out in a landslide, leaving the chuch next door completely intact. This we gathered from the tour guides in-depth Spanish explanation. We also caught the words "calcium" and <b>...</b>
