These cars have always been my inspiration. The owners aren't anything like the type of people that own all the other cars that appear at this show. Nearly every car has been heavily-modified to produce some of the meanest, most powerful and best-handling cars ever built. Most everything else from any manufacturer at the show is mostly-stock. It's considered a sin to modify a Ferrari or Lamborghini, but the Pantera crew is like an art gallery. I grew up with one of these in my driveway, and I love turning out wherever they might gather. Maybe I'll own one someday? The Pantera is typically powered by a Ford 351 Cleveland V8, coupled to a ZF-5 5-speed manual transaxle, and wedged into the back of a beautiful Pininfarina-designed touring chassis with meaty tires and incredible balance. These things are loud, and unlike all the other Italian-bodied cars, they have an American-made big-block rumble that's unmistakable. Sold at Mercury dealerships and produced in very limited quantities between 1971 and 1991, it's not something you see on the street every day. Salute it if you do. It's a piece of cold war industrial automotive machinery. After the GT-40 project that slaughtered the European car manufacturers in the 3 previous years of LeMans racing, the DeTomaso Pantera was Ford's next attempt to twist the knife in Enzo Ferrari's back by building an Italian-bodied consumer car that was faster than all of his V-12's.
