Building the 1987 Subaru Alcyone VR - XT - Vortex
Description
This is the build process a 1/24 scale model of one of Subaru's more unusual cars, the Subaru Alcyone. This car was effectively Subaru's answer to the Toyota Celica of the time, complete with Subaru's traditional turbo and 4wd setups as options. For reasons only known to Subaru, this car had various names in different markets - in Europe and North America it was XT, for Japan it was called Alcyone and Australia and New Zealand it was Vortex. Stylistically it took the 1980s wedge approach to the extreme - and has a Triumph TR7 meets Ford Scorpio look to it... This particular model is, judging by the hood vents, a depiction of the JDM market Alcyone VR in 1.8L flat-4 cylinder 4WD Turbo guise. As you will notice, the model itself is unusual, in that it is almost a missing link between Tamiya's snap together motorized 1/32 scale vehicles and their detailed static 1/24 plastic kitset models (glue and paint required - I have done several of these over the years), in that it uses a detailed, accurate 1/24 scale bodyshell, yet beneath the surface is a heavy duty (well for a plastic kit anyway) motorized RWD chassis that is out of keeping with the rest of the car (yes I know the Alcyone was FWD and 4WD :). Hence the underbody detail that my other cars have does not appear here. Soundtrack is Talk Talk - "Life's what you make it" (1986)
