1953 DeSoto Powermaster Four Door Sedan
Description
1952 was the inaugural year for the Firedome V8...this was the next to last year for the flathead 6. You can see why, with a car this heavy, a V8 would definitely have the edge. Powerflite, the two speed automatic would be introduced in the DeSoto line in 1954...so this is one of the last cars to sport the semi-automatic transmission with fluid drive. Note that the clutch pedal is still present, necessary when slipping the car into a drive range, and to change among the drive ranges, Low, High, and Reverse. A stately car, the boss at Chrysler insisted that cars in his regime would have "chair-high seats" and accommodate the gentlemen and ladies with hats! Yes..hats were definitely worn in this period...it was John F. Kennedy that led the rebellion against them later! DeSoto was the sponsor for "You Bet Your Life" on network TV, starring Groucho Marx! His spontaneity on that quiz show was legendary!
