Jack Pettis and his Band."l gotta get myself somebody to love" 1927

Description

Jack Pettis made literally 100s of records, yet precious little is known about him.(could not find even one photo of the man)He was with the NOR Kings then joined Ben Bernie's band, before making scores of records in his own name.He composed many records also with Al Goering, the most famous being "up and at em" Pettis used the usual star studio musicians from NY for his records(on this one Venuti/Lang feature. He got himself married and then in the mid 30s disappeared off the scene. He died in his late 40s (born 1902) The concensus is that Pettis is unknown and unwritten about due to the fact he did not have a stand out personality, did not do drugs sex and rock n roll so he was rather uneventful to write about.Even musicians from his recording sessions, when asked could recall very little about him.Pettis was a pioneer in playing the C melody sax and his playing had a distinct sound, easily recognisable on records. However there is one interesting event in his music life and that is that Ben Bernie's Band was featured in an experimental sound talkie in....1925!! and Pettis plays a solo.So he can claim to being the very first person to have played a jazz solo on film. This is a nice record taken at a faster pace than other versions with a pleasant due singing (scrappy lambert being one).Enjoy...
