Xantia 2.0 HDi Fuel Tank Pump Tests with Pump removed from Tank - P0230 Fault Code
Description
I removed the pump from the fuel tank to investigate why I was getting air in the fuel pump outlet during a test yesterday. It looks like the system uses a "Jet Pump" on the bottom of the pump outer canister to raise the level of fuel in the canister so it is considerably above the level of fuel in the tank when the tank fuel level is low. The jet pump relies on there being enough of a return fuel flow to squirt a jet of fuel across the open cylinder on the base of the canister. Not only is the jet directed straight at the canister inlet flap valve, the jet also draws in fuel from under the canister and forces it into the canister. In my test yesterday (Test 2) I did not have the return connected to the pump's return feed, it was just flowing into the fuel tank filler. In this situation the canister was just filling by gravity without the assistance of the jet pump and the electric pump was able to empty the canister much quicker than it could refill by gravity. Once the canister was empty the electric pump would draw in air even though there was a good 12cm fuel level in the tank. When the fuel tank is full, fuel will flow over the top of the canister so it will always be full. It looks like there is no fault with this pump. I have refitted it and the MIL lamp is now off. (For today anyway!) However during the second journey today the fuel level guage stopped working!!! Update after a couple of weeks - The MIL light has come on twice and both at the same point about 0.5 ...
