Peugeot 504 restoration part 19. Engine cold start after 3 years.
Description
It's been a bit of a stressful time recently with the 504. I'd spent a lot of time getting the detail right and looking good. There is always something that is going to go wrong, and simply the engine would not fire. I'd followed all the Haynes book instructions but something was not right. I took the head off again, checked it. Changed the fuel injector pump back to the original non turbo which I knew worked, and nothing. On Sunday, after a break away from it for a couple of weeks I had a clean thought pattern and went back to the valves. The Haynes BOL has a method of where you get one valve in a certain position then adjust others - this was my downfall as the positioning of the cam is vital in this method. I turned to my own method which works great and takes no more time. I watch the inlet valve open then close, keep turning the crank over until I feel a compression start. This is the point where both valves are guaranteed to be closed on that cylinder, set both the inlet and exhaust on that cylinder. Turn the crank and the exhaust opens, carry on turning the inlet starts to open as the exhaust closes - full cycle. Do the next cylinder. The inlets and exhaust are not in the same position on each cylinder so you need to use the diagram from the BOL (I now have the full Peugeot dealer issued manuals so the BOL will go in the bin I think!).
