1953 Cadillac Series 62 Coupe with Factory Air Conditioning Part 1
Description
This was a spur-of-the-moment project, so excuse the obvious unprofessional blunders. I hadn't had the car out in awhile--I took it to the shop to have some oil added to the AC system as I could hear the compressor rattling a bit. Since I'd gotten a camera several weeks ago, i decided to see how it works outside and this is the result. In Part 2, I go over the AC components. Since it was so spur-ot-the-moment, I forgot some of the things I meant to say in the commentary: It was bought new in San Antonio, TX by a packing company family named Steurnagel. They sold it to an employee in 1974 who kept it until 1988. I talked to this person and he said when he got it in '74 it still had its factory tires. He sold it to a Cadillac collector in 1988 who wanted it for his wife to drive since it had AC. She passed away soon after that and I found it in the October '89 issue of Hemmings Motor News. It had a miss and the #1 cylinder had an anti-fouler plug in it. All it required to get it running good was replacing a bent push rod on #1 and a carb kit. It had 25K miles on it in '89 and it now has 40K. These cars have the new Dual-Range Hydra-Matic in conjunction with a 3.07 axle ratio--there are two "Drive" ranges available, one which locks the transmission into 3rd gear.
