Yet that's not exactly true. I could give you many examples why, but one recent example should suffice: "The Miracle on the Hudson." All the passengers who boarded that jet liner consciously or subconsciously trusted that they would arrive safely. Of course, that destination wasn't intended to be the Hudson River. The modest captain, Chesley "Sully" Sullenberger, also had to have great trust in his ability to land a passenger jet safely on a busy river flowing past one of the world's most densely populated cities. But trust in exactly what? "Before we answer that, let's see exactly what we mean by trust." The word originates from around 1200 AD, from a Scandinavian source meaning "confidence and reliance." Then later, it came to include an agreement or covenant. To have confidence and reliance in another, one has to know something about that person: their character, their beliefs, how they've handled adversity and challenges, and how they've rebounded from their failures. Yes, every one of us, from the least to the greatest, has made mistakes and errors in judgment. "But isn't that why pencils have erasers?"
