The history of surfing in California dates back to 1907, when Hawaiian surfer George Freeth arrived in Redondo Beach at the invitation of railroad magnate Henry Huntington. The Surfing USA culture was born. Today, when the best California surfers just happen to be canine lovers, they bring their dogs along for the ride. Every June, Loews Coronado Bay Resort in San Diego hosts its annual surfing dog competition, which draws seabound hounds and thousands of adoring fans from around the nation. The event takes place at Imperial Beach, a dog-friendly stretch of sand just about 5 miles north of Mexico. It's a dog-eat-dog competition, with only the best surfers taking home the prize. No dog paddling allowed! Heats are divided up into three categories Under 40 pounds, over 40 pounds and tandem surfing for dogs and their owners. These hot dogs have three waves to impress the judges and are scored on confidence level, length of ride and, of course, a bit of moxy. Want to get in on the action?
