1935 AUBURN BOATTAIL, A TRUE & RARE CLASSIC
Description
THIS CAR'S OFFICIAL NAME IS AUBURN 851 SUPERCHARGED BOATTAIL SPEEDSTER. AUBURN MOTORS WANTED TO MAKE A SPLASH IN '35, WHAT BETTER WAY THAN TO MAKE IT LOOK LIKE A BOAT! THE POWERPLANT FOR THIS 3700 LB. CAR WAS A STRAIGHT 8 150 BHP LYCOMING SUPERCHARGED WITH A 2-SPEED RARE AXLE. DESIGNED BY AUBURN-CORD-DUESENBERG HEAD, AUGUST DUESENBERG, THE INTENT WAS TO IMPRESS THE PUBLIC AT AUTO SHOWS. THESE BOATTAILS WERE HAND BUILT AND SOLD FOR A BARGAIN COST OF $2245. BEFORE THE FIRST FEW BOATTAILS LEFT THE FACTORY, THE 127 INCH WHEELBASED SPEEDSTERS HAD TWO TEST DRIVERS DRIVE THEM AROUND A TRACK TO SPEEDS OVER 100 MPH. EVERY CAR HAD A PLAQUE INSTALLED ON THE ASSEMBLY LINE STATING THAT IT REACHED THAT SPEED. VIEWING THIS VIDEO YOU WILL SEE THIS EXAMPLE IS RESTORED BUT MOSTLY ORIGINAL, EXCEPT FOR THE STEERING WHEEL, WIRE WHEELS. AND DASH GAUGES. OBVIOUSLY, THIS CAR HAS BEEN UPDATED FOR MODERN DRIVING. NOTICE THE HUGE EXHAUST PIPES AND THE PONTOON FENDERS SWOOPING UP TO THE BOATTAIL. FOG LIGHTS MOUNTED ON THE FRONT INCLUDE THE TALL V-SHAPED GRILLE AND SMALL ROUND TURN SIGNAL LIGHTS. THE TACHOMETER, CENTER ON DASH, WAS THE FIRST FOR AN AMERICAN CAR AT THE TIME. THESE SPEEDSTERS WERE ONLY MADE IN '35 AND '36 FOR A TOTAL LESS THAN 500. SO HERE IS A GREAT RESTORATION AND VERY RARE CLASSIC. Another rare car brought to you by 55lincoln.
