(4.23.11) 'World Car' Award Winners! THE WINNER OF THE 2011 WORLD CAR OF THE YEAR IS THE NISSAN LEAF. Carlos Tavares, President of Nissan North America, proudly holding his car's award winning gold statuette before a crowd of global media cameras at the New York International Auto Show. The Nissan Leaf is a 5-seater, 5-door hatchback, the world's first mass-produced electric car. The Leaf's lithium-ion battery and electric motor generate 108hp and 206 lb ft of torque, pushing it from zero to 60mph in 11.5 seconds with a top speed of 90mph. Nissan says tt has a range of over 100 miles on a full charge. There were other award winners as well. Including the Chevy Volt, winning for 2011 World Green Car. On top of having been named the 2011 North American Car of the Year. Chevrolet's Vice President of Marketing declared "The selection of the Volt as the World Green Car is a further proof point of the fuel efficient technologies that are now being offered by the Chevrolet brand around the world," calling the Volt "a truly remarkable vehicle with the potential to transform transportation around the globe." Another car taking home the gold at the World Car Awards was the Ferrari 458 Italia declared the 2011 World Performance Car.
