Sunbeam 12-16 Brake Shoes on lathe
Description
Edwadian 12-16 Sunbeams had rear brakes only these were metal shoes to metal drums. Some cars are on the road with metal to metal brakes and their drivers find them to be adequate. Not me! I prefer modern linings and needed therefore to remove some material to provide sufficient room for liningsto be attached. I thought that this would be relatively simple job;set it up on a lathe and turn down accordingly. I do not have a lathe that is big enough for this job so I went to Classic Vehicle Engineering near Peterborough to get this done. There was a fair amount of work needed to be done to get the shoes in precisely the right orientation. However once done and securely held then the job could commence. I was and then astounded at the hardness of the shoes they must be cast steel and hardened originally as well as in subsequent use. Needless to say the job was completed. I am off now to get shoes relined with a medium to soft lining.
