ABC Sports Outro, 1993

Description

When the afternoon sports programming was done, ABC would air a long outro that included sponsor plugs, a promo for the next sports programming on the network (Professional Bowlers Tour FTW), and of course, "World News Sunday is coming up over most of these ABC stations". Everything is rolled into one cohesive one minute piece, announced by ABC's Dan Foley. And what a piece it is. The whole ABC Sports look was a major departure from the fancy CGI-heavy stuff favored by CBS and ESPN at the time, but you can't argue that it is very professionally executed. The graphic design is bold, destinctive, and probably could be used today. But I have to particularly mention the music - that incredible, inspiring, utterly fantastic music that in my mind is amongst the best ever used for televised sports. I don't know who did it (It sounds like either Score Productions or Edd Kalehoff), but they need to be recognized and applauded. The whole look only lasted two years until they went for something more corporate (understandable - there wasn't even a set logo for ABC Sports when this was used). And you have to love Dan Foley's announcing - "This has been a presentation of ABC Sports... Recognized around the world... as the LEADER... in SPORTS TELEVISION!"
