Entry from: Mumbai (Bombay), India Entry Title: "Bombay" Entry: "Mumbai provides another contrast in a the long line of contrasts that are India. It is very different to Bundi and different to everywhere else we've been so far. For a start it's hot. Hot and humid. There's no rickshaws. It's got garbage collection! The traffic is insane and every other car is a highly decorated Premier taxi, apparently a 50's Fiat. This says so much about India - that a manufacturer of a **** car sold all the bits needed to make it, and it has lasted into 2009. Now though, they are fighting for road space with lots of little Japanese style hatches that have proliferated all over India. I've also seen more luxury cars here than anywhere else. Not just humble Mercs or BMW's either, they are always the giant ones. The sight of one of these cruising past a row of slum shanties is an image that has stuck. And there were plenty such images. Bombay (I like it better than Mumbai) is a crumbling metropolis groaning under the weight of a massive population. Apparently it's something like 16 million - more than Australia all up I think. The old colonial buildings give it look of "a tropical London" in Tara's words. It has some really attractive parts and some more ugly aspects as well but really is an intriguing city that takes a <b>...</b>
